India's squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has seen a few key changes, with star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah being ruled out due to a lower back injury. The 31-year-old from Ahmedabad, who last played in India’s ODI World Cup 2023 final, has been a significant figure in Indian cricket, but his injury has now forced him to miss the prestigious tournament. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed this development on Tuesday and announced that young fast bowler Harshit Rana will replace Bumrah in the 15-member squad.
Bumrah’s absence marks a significant setback for India, as the fast bowler has been one of their most reliable players in recent years. His last competitive match was during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in January 2025, where he faced issues with a back spasm. Although he was initially named in the provisional squad for the Champions Trophy, the BCCI made the final call on Tuesday to rule him out, citing concerns over his fitness.
In another change, young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been excluded from the squad. Jaiswal, who had initially been part of the provisional squad, will be replaced by spinner Varun Chakaravarthy. Chakaravarthy, who made his ODI debut for India on February 9 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack, impressed with his performance, picking up one wicket in his 10-over spell. His inclusion adds a spin option to India’s squad as they prepare for the tournament in Pakistan and Dubai.
The BCCI also confirmed three non-travelling substitutes: Yashasvi Jaiswal, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, and all-rounder Shivam Dube, who will be on standby in case of any further changes.
The ICC Champions Trophy, set to take place from February 19 to March 9, will see India compete against other top cricketing nations across three venues in Pakistan and one in Dubai. With these changes to the squad, the Indian team will be hoping to adjust and continue their pursuit of the prestigious trophy.
